Imperial Beach Pier Dusk

2 SECONDS · F/16 · ISO100 · 19MM (EF 11-24MM) · CANON EOS R5

Imperial Beach Pier sits at the southernmost tip of San Diego County, offering unique compositions including the pier's distinctive pavilion, pelicans gliding over the surf, and spectacular dusk skies with no obstructions to the horizon.

Imperial Beach is San Diego's best-kept secret. The pier's unique architectural character — including its pavilion and distinctly mid-century bones — gives it a photographic personality quite different from the other piers. Add the proximity to the Tijuana Estuary and the undeveloped shoreline to the south, and you have a scene that feels genuinely remote.

At dusk, the pelicans come through reliably, giving you the opportunity to combine long-exposure water work with occasional wildlife. Arnel will work with you on timing: anticipating the birds, knowing when the sky is at its best color, and capturing the pavilion structure in silhouette versus in light. A session here consistently surprises guests who expected something less dramatic.
